Personal Novel Writing Month

On 2017-01-03 by Karen M. Dillon

First off, I meant to post this on January 1st but due to internet connection issues was unable to do so, so let’s just pretend like I did, okay?

Okay, so for anyone who is unfamiliar NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is in November of every year. Which I think is a completely ridiculous time to start something.

November is just not a good month to begin something . . . at least it’s not for me. Because every year in January I think, oh yeah, I’m def gonna do NaNo this year and finally get that book done.

And I think this all year long until November comes and I realise that I have spent the entire year thinking about doing a book, but not actually doing it because I was thinking that NaNo would be a good time to start . . . in November. But after I’ve spent 10 months of a year not doing something I’m pretty attached to my daily routine of fuck all and don’t feel like changing so close to the end of the year.

So this year I have decided that I will NOT be doing NaNo this year (as I haven’t in all the previous years).

In 2017 I will start my own trend, which I call PerNoWriMo (Personal Novel Writing Month).

Basically all the same principles of NaNo apply.

The goal: Complete a first draft in one month. (or at least 50,000 words of a book)

The month I have chosen is January. Because I will begin this year as I wish to continue it. Which is by actually getting some work done in the first 10 months of the year as well as the 11th month. Possibly the 12th month as well, but I don’t wanna put TOO much pressure on myself.

I also picked January because I have some time off from work at the start of this month which gives me a lot of extra free time to get stuff done.

So, below is the plan for 2017 and if all goes well I should be able to get myself onto a schedule where I can publish 2 books a year:

Personal Novel Writing Month Part 1– When Karen Gets Shit Done

  • January 1st – 31st: Write a first draft
  • February 1st – 14th: Edits Part 1 – Karen makes the 2nd draft
  • February 15th – 28th: Edits Part 2 – Josh makes the words sound better
  • March 1st – 7th: Apply all updates to the manuscript
  • March 8th: CreateSpace manuscript upload
  • March 10th: Order proof copies of book
  • Some point between March 10th & April 1st . . . Maybe?: Proof copies arrive for spell checks and beta reads
  • 2 weeks after that (because dates mean nothing anymore): Apply updates to the manuscript
  • Whenever that’s done: Update the CreateSpace file
  • 24-48hrs after that: Check digital proof & approve file  Book should be published around the end of April.
  • May: Do nothing – you earned it.

Then starting June 1st: PerNoWriMo Part 2 – Why is there still more shit to do?
